Overcoming Analysis Paralysis

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

"I could go to the store, but then there might be a line, and if it takes too long I won't be back in time for this other thing. Filling out this packet is sort of important, but it's not due for 2 weeks, so I'm not sure if I should start this or work on my taxes."

"Analysis paralysis" is a phrase used to describe the inability to make decisions due to overthinking. It is typically due to anxiety, but difficulties with executive functioning can contribute. Imagine this: You have a to-do list, and there are 25 items on the list. You have a bit of unexpected free time, so you look at the list, and think about which item you will tackle with your spare time. You get lost in thinking about each task, and why you should or shouldn't complete it.

Some degree of analysis is necessary and even helpful, but overthinking can result in not taking any action at all. The result is that the free time you were so excited about has been used up not making a decision.

Cognitive rehab therapists will not specifically address the anxiety that comes around decision making. For instance, some people feel scared to make a decision because if it is "the wrong decision", or if they don't end up following through, they feel shame. Many people that I work with describe feeling incredibly overwhelmed by their to-do list to the point where they become emotional when they look at it. This is a great topic to address in cognitive behavioral therapy, a form of psychotherapy.

A cognitive rehab therapist can help you develop a framework for organization, planning, prioritization, and decision making which can reduce overwhelm and allow for forward motion. Make an appointment to learn more!
