When you've sustained injuries in a motor vehicle crash, it can be very overwhelming to figure out what to do and where to begin. All of a sudden you may have to navigate a number of issues: finding a new vehicle, understanding insurance, finding medical care, processing the trauma of what happened...
It never hurts to go to the ER right after the accident if you are experiencing pain, or any post-concussive symptoms (e.g., headache, nausea, confusion, imbalance, dizziness, fogginess). Typically if you go to the ER, you will be instructed to follow-up with your primary care physician. Hopefully your doctor screens for various symptoms, educates you about concussions, and provides referrals. Oftentimes, this is not the case. Concussion care has come a long way over the last 5 years, and many people are not well-versed in it.
Sometimes concussions are mild and resolve on their own within a few weeks. Sometimes they require specialists to address specific symptoms or impairments. As a healthcare professional that has specialized in treating cognitive impairments related to concussions for 13 years, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge through continuing education and experience. I conduct a thorough assessment, and ask very specific questions in order to make appropriate referrals and build a treatment plan that yields progress.
If you aren't sure where to begin, give Flatirons Cognitive Therapy a call. You shouldn't have to figure it all out on your own, especially if you've been injured.
