Problem Solving

Let's work together to set you on a path toward meeting your goals

Ramya Shyam is tremendous. She is a kind and compassionate individual who understood the challenges and frustrations I was experiencing. It was so validating to have a healthcare provider acknowledge and empathize with my challenges instead of dismissing them. It was reassuring to finally be ‘heard’.

After my first concussion,  Ramya was able to give me a plan, measurable goals and strategies while explaining how and why what she was doing works. She'd worked her process with enough people with brain injuries to see (and love) the moments when things started to shift and click for people.

I’m grateful for the help Ramya gave me. She’s a great listener and was able to give me some good tips and tricks for organization, etc to deal with my ADHD brain!

  • What is meant by "boutique cognitive therapy"?
Flatirons Cognitive Therapy strives to offer individualized care, with more direct access to the provider than is typical. The level and frequency of communication, time spent with each patient, coordination and planning, and attention to each case outside of the patient's scheduled visit is greater. We purposely limit our caseloads because we do not want our patients to feel like they are "just a number". We hope that each client will feel well-supported. We are very comfortable working with people of all backgrounds, with varying cognitive skills and interests. For example, we have treated doctors, attorneys, entrepreneurs, construction workers, truck drivers, stay-at-home parents, freelance writers, teachers, graduate students, and people who are actively looking for employment.
  • Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to see us. Referrals are typically necessary if you are using health insurance, but because we do not bill insurance, a doctor’s referral is not needed.
  • What forms of payment do you accept?
We will accept cash, checks, or credit cards - Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. We can also accept HSA.
  • Do you accept insurance?
No, we are currently not in network with commercial health insurance or Medicaid. This is primarily because billing insurance makes it very challenging for us to practice in the way we feel yields the best outcomes. We can provide a superbill if you want to try to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Under certain circumstances, we can bill auto insurance.
  • Is there a cancellation or no show fee?
No shows and cancellations made less than 24 hours before the appointment will be charged 50% of the cost of the visit, as this makes it very difficult for us to schedule other patients in need. Cancellation fees will not be applied in the event of emergency or illness.
  • What should I bring to my first appointment?
Driver’s license Reading glasses or hearing aids, if you wear them Any records that are not available in electronic form
  • How many visits will I need?
It is difficult to answer this question without an evaluation. We are usually better able to provide an estimate by the end of the first session.
  • If I am sick can I still have my appointment?
We ask that you avoid coming into the office if you are sick, but we are happy to change any in-person appointments to telehealth if you still wish to have the appointment.
  • I don't have a diagnosis, but I know I'm not functioning as well as I could be. Can you help me?
Not everyone who comes to Flatirons Cognitive Therapy has a medical diagnosis. Some of our clients are just people who are struggling to figure out how to manage certain aspects of life. Some are people who have had diagnostic workup which doesn't show any neurodegenerative process, but they still feel they aren't functioning well. We have helped overwhelmed parents, students who are not keeping up with their schoolwork, and people who feel that they aren't as sharp as they used to be. Our goal is to understand each client's specific goals and needs, and provide functional strategies and guidance for lifestyle changes that optimize cognitive performance. Feel free to call and share your specific struggles so we can figure out if this is a good fit!
  • I live far away from your office. Is telehealth as effective as in-person treatment?
This is a great question. We do have a slight preference for in-person testing because we are able to do a little more if the patient is in our office, but we are still able to get quite a bit of information through telehealth evaluations. We find telehealth therapy sessions to be very effective. During the COVID-19 lockdown, many health professionals had to adapt to telehealth service delivery, and we found that most of our patients actually prefer it. Through video calls, screen sharing, and other tools, we are able to provide the same level of service that our in-person clients receive. Telehealth makes hard-to-find, specialized care accessible to people in all parts of our state, and even in other states. Teletherapy is a great option for individuals who cannot or will not drive, individuals who live far away, or individuals who only have an hour to spare during the day and need to squeeze an appointment in during that time.
